Club Volunteer Testimonial

When I moved to Savannah, I was looking for a volunteer opportunity when I realized that I lived just down the street from the Frank Callen Boys & Girls Club. I love to sew and when I realized that sewing was no longer taught in school, I approached the club and asked if I could teach sewing. From beginners learning the basics of sewing by creating a pillow followed by pants with pockets and a waistband to intermediate class where they learned to make a jacket. In other classes they sewed backpacks and dresses.

The Club is an amazing place and the Staff does an amazing job mentoring and caring for the kids of Savannah. While teaching sewing I got to know each of my students. I loved that I had both young women and men in my class and I really enjoyed the conversations they had with each other and with me. The best part was the excitement on their faces when they started with a flat piece of material and they made it into something that they could use or wear. They were so proud of themselves, they couldn’t wait to show their friends and the staff what they made. Teaching sewing to the kids at the Frank Callen Boys & Girls club definitely brought me joy.
